Week 21 -- Transfer 3

Hello all!!

This week was packed with getting ready for transfers! We had a lot of appointments before Sorella B left and now she's gone and I don't know what happened to all the people we teach.  LOL (just kidding -- I got it). I'm super pumped for this transfer with Sorella S.  I have a lot to learn and we are getting along very well. I will get to see Sorella B at the temple open house and I was super sad when she left -- we both cried because we became like sisters. (And she even said that and she has four sisters so she knows what it's like). But I am so excited to have Sorella S. We are getting along so well and SYLing (speaking your language) and having fun with it. I have a lot to learn from her.  She is awesome.

The highlight of this week was teaching M. We taught her a lot (because her baptismal date is close) -- following the  prophet, Word of Wisdom, and tithing and she COMPLETELY accepted all of them and was excited and completely understood them!!!! INCREDIBLE!

It's such a small world that your friend is cousins with Sorella R!  She is awesome!  She's taking over Caserte because her trainer, Sorella S, is now  my companion and she is killing it.  Her Italian is so good.  She's seriously incredible .

Love you glad you had a good week!!!! Praying for you always!!!!
That's all I feel like writing but I love you all xoxoxoxoxo

Also questions
1.  How have your first few days gone with Sorella S?
So good!!!!
2.  How was church yesterday?
Church was good! Just the usual. Sorella S translated for Relief Society and the Italians just talked over her, poor girl. I tried to warn her they would. I'll do Relief Society next time, I think. I've realized I'm a lot better at translating than I should be for my language skills.

3.  What was your happiest moment this week?

Just being hyped for this transfer.

4.  Tell me about a tender mercy you experienced this week.
Not getting angry while SYLing (Speaking Your Language). It's a big deal.

5.  What stood out to you in your studies this week?
We didn't get a lot of studies in, if I'm being honest, because we had so much to do. One thing from DDM meeting, though, is one thing one of the Zone leaders said - you already chose this and submitted yourself to the Lord so why are you going back on that now? (not aimed at me directly -- we were just talking about Lot's wife)

6.  Did you try any new or interesting foods this week?  What was the best thing you ate?

Everything. Food here is so good. Also me and Sorella S are trying to be healthy girls this week so we are trying to start Whole30 (we accidentally already ate a pizza and gelato, lol).

7.  Have you had any more luck finding pants?  Are there any sizes or styles you want me to pick and send to you through my friend when she comes to Rome?

No. No pants. I gave up on pants. They are just kind of ugly. I want them high waisted if I get them but, like blah.

8.  What have you learned about yourself recently?

I am so much more patient than I used to be!!!!!

9.  Do you have any more details about the open house?  When you'll be there, etc.?

February 3rd!  The open house is open all day but mornings are private tours and then afternoons are open to the public.  We don't know our exact schedule or anything but it's going to be a lot of work and a lot of fun!

10.  Do you know how much I love you?
Yes

11.  What specifically can we pray for for you, your companion, and your investigators?
For the people we teach - pray for them to understand the need to act.

12.  What are you doing for P-day this week?

We went to Veil of Christ and then shopping on Toledo.

13.  Is saldi still going on?  How long does it last?
Yes and I have no idea.

Love you!!!!

The Anziani came and helped us clean up the last of the fire mess.

A new top and skirt that I bought.

We accidentally dressed alike!

Our banana and Nutella dessert tortilla pizzas last week.

Pizza!

It's so pretty here.

Saying goodbye....

Week 20 -- Transfer Calls!

BUONGIORNO!!!!

So this morning before I say anything else, we got our transfer calls!!!! Scary!!!! So my trainer should technically be going home today but she got an extension to work in the temple open house so she is headed up to Rome, and my sister training leader Sorella Sullivan is becoming my new companion. Which is super exciting because she is an incredible missionary.  I'm excited because I have a lot to learn from her.  She is an incredibly hard worker, and I'm struggling a bit with motivation because everyone around me is dying (finishing their missions and going home).

Few things that did happen this week --

1. We did a greenie scambio (exchanges) so Sorella Rowberry came to Pozzuoli and we booped around the city. She is also incredible (she learned a lot of Italian before this mission and you can tell) and we taught a lesson with M. (who is doing so well -- she asked us what time her baptism will be so she can ask for the time off work) and English group and then went finding, mostly temple open house finding which is fun and less awkward because we don't have to have like we don't know what to do conversations. They generally all go the same way. BUT this was actually super helpful because I realized wow, yes, I can speak Italian -- wow, yes, I do have conversational skills.  It's incredible. It's like this. When Mom is home I can't make my own doctor's appointments. When I go to college I am fine. Also, when my "mission mom" (Sorella B.) is around I can't speak Italian. When she is gone I am fine. I have to learn to stand on my own feet.

2. We started on Wednesday eating a pizza everyday before Sorella Brandt leaves. I mean, hey, you gotta take full advantage of Napoli while you are here. It's been delicious. Saturday I really think I had the best pizza I've ever had so that was incredible. Also Sunday (obviously we can't get a pizza) so we were planning on buying also a dessert pizza Saturday and eating it for breakfast but they didn't have any at the place we went so Sunday we just made our own little dessert pizzas with nutella and tortillas and bananas :)

3. E. update. She did not get baptized. We were pretty stressed about getting everything ready and we met with her I think on Monday and she was like, I don't feel ready but I know I want the gift of the Holy Ghost, like I need the help of the Holy Ghost with me always!!!!! So she said, ok, can I let you know on Friday... I need to make sure I do all the things I need to do first. And we met with her on Thursday and she doesn't feel ready.  We have some ideas of some things that will help her so we have a lot of hope that it will help her make the changes in her life needed!!

Some other things happened but like not that important. There is a lot of work to do here in Pozzuoli and I am
grateful for that and excited to see what happens this transfer!

Questions...

1. How was church today?

Church was good. My ward is somehow a week behind in Come Follow Me! It was Sorella B's last week so I helped her write notes to everyone and salute people.

2.  What was the funnest thing that happened this week?  What was the funniest thing?

Eating a pizza everyday this week. It's incredible.

Funniest thing(s) - caused by us obviously not being Italian and being in Napoli. Yesterday we were headed back from Napoli because we did a mostra for the temple, and we were on the train and like no one else was and we were in a car by ourselves because no one was on the train and then this group of ragazaci (mischievous youth) came to our car and one of course sat down next to us, like way too close and started hitting on us and we had Jesus DVDs in our hands and Sorella B. told them we were nuns and they still kept going way too close to my face and so I said, "I don't speak Italian," first in English (you've gotta sell it). then in Italian. Gratefully they got off at the next stop :)

Also just now today ( just all the creepy men stories for right now) a man like ran up to us -- he was so excited and asked us if we were English from the "USA" and laughing hysterically (super nice guy) ... tried to bach (that's not an actual word -- but kisses is bacio so when they do a kiss on each cheek it's a bach - like botch) us like 4 times and were like, no non posso, and so he started kissing on our hands (un bacio for the hand) and then just plants one on Sorella B's. Just funny things.

3.  What was your happiest moment this week?  Tell me about a time you felt joy this week.

I think every time we meet with M I feel so much joy.

4.  What stood out to you in your studies this week?

I have been reading in Mosiah, King Benjamin's address, and just the fact that we are literally nothing. In one verse it talks about how we aren't even as dust without God and we will never be worthy. The phrase unprofitable servants really stuck put to me, because that's a hard thing to think of as a missionary that I won't be a profitable servant. But it's so true because for every I put forth God doubles or triples it. We are forever indebted to him, and I definitely got my boxes broken and humbled this week with the struggles we have had in the work and then that scripture study.

So this week I will be studying how to be humble but also having hope and confidence.

5.  What are you doing for P-day?

We came into Napoli to do some more shopping (literally saldi is INSANE and we LOVE it - I got a scarf and a jacket and a dress), got a pizza with the Zone leaders because they picked up sach (like ragazzaci) jackets for us, which are these dope jackets all the ragazzaci wear that are super spendy but they found them at a super sketch market so we got them. See picture -- it is lit. Now headed back to grocery shop, probably work on (books that you have to make for your companion) and maybe nap.

6.  Did you eat anything new or unusual this week?

A pizza everyday. And for Sunday we homemade a pizza with tortillas, nutella and banana.  It was nothing like a real pizza. Also we had a dinner appointment with the W family in our ward and they made INCREDIBLE fried jalapeno tilapia and angel hair pasta and it was incredible.

7.  Have you gotten any more information about the temple open house?

I think so but I honestly haven't read the email yet. I think my dates to be there start on the 3rd but I am not sure.

8.  Do you know how much I love you?

Always

9.  What have you learned about yourself this week?

I am nothing on my own.

10.  Tell me about a tender mercy that you experienced this week, or a time that you felt the hand of the Lord in your life.

On greenie scambios me and Sorella R were talking and one thing she suggested for me to do this week is ask for specific things in my studies. I have no idea what I asked for if I'm being honest but I was reading in Mosiah 3 when King Benjamin is testifying of Christ and talking about the atonement and in that moment I could feel my Savior's love for me so strong I started crying a little bit (which is not a thing that I do so it's actually significant) and it just verified to me that if we ask God for something really from our heart he will give it to us. He is waiting to bless us.

Love you all!!!

Not many pictures this week because Google Photos isn't working.

Wow -- pants -- so much movement!

Me and a cat.  There are so many cats here.

We did a mostra for the temple in Napoli and one of our Anziani said that he looked too much like a Jehovah's Witness with a full suit so he took my jacket (black and tight, looked very Italian) and I took his (like kinda hip though)

Sach jackets with us and the Zone leaders -- aw, so cute matching

Week 18 -- We Went to the Rome, Italy Temple!

Hello!!!! Happy saldi!!!!!!! (Everything is on sale and it's called saldi so we are shopping all day)

This week started off a little rocky. Sorella B was a little sad and I feed off of other people's energy so then I got a little sad. But we got to meet with some people and yay -- good fun.

Then on Thursday WE GOT TO GO TO THE TEMPLE!!!!!!!!! We left on Thursday night to go up to Rome so our week was strange for normal work, but we got on the train like 6 pm and we were on a fast train but it just like stopped in the middle of the journey and we were 100 minutes late!!!! So we didn't get to Rome until like 9 pm (should've been 8 pm) and then got to stay at the villa with 28 sorelle -- it was crazy. We didn't get to sleep until like 12 (and then wake up at 6.30 am) so the next day I think everyone was exhausted. But we ate and then headed off to the chapel and the director of temples and our area 70 were there and spoke to us and then took us through the temple for a tour. IT IS INCREDIBLE. Everything is so incredibly beautiful and the Spirit is so strong. I walked into the celestial room and literally every hair on my body stood up. President Pickerd talked to us in the sealing room about how this is his goal for all of us and how Heavenly Father is proud of us and our parents are proud of us and there wasn't a dry eye in the room. Everything about the Rome Temple is perfect. The bride's room is blue, there are a lot of ovals because the whole temple is an oval, and the first instruction room is muralled, I think with the Amalfi Coast.  And if that wasn't enough then we got to go to the Visitor's Center!!!!!  Also there is a incredible stained glass mural at the Visitor's Center and the artist was there and talking about it. There are so many interactive teaching booths (that can teach 839493 times better than I ever could) and around every corner there is something incredible! I am so excited for so many people to come to the open house and feel the spirit of the temple. Then we practiced our talking points and how to guide people through when they first get there and then off we went.  I am so excited to do a session in the temple because my testimony is growing so much so I am sure my outlook and ability to learn will have also grown.

And I ended this incredible day in maybe the worst way ever... We got to Roma termini and we both didn't feel well and wanted healthy food so we found some place that looked healthy and the guy like didn't show us a menu, only talked to us so like ok, whatever. We sit down and get our food. It is not good. Like the worst salad I ever had.  It tasted like hand sanitizer. There were a lot of things I could get into but I won't because I don't want to think about it a lot. So then we go to check out and it's $27.50????????? Are you KIDDING. For two little terrible salads (and we only ordered one and thought they split it) and little cups of juice.. So we are like whatttttttt and anyways one thing turns to another and I was arguing with this guy about how expensive it was (it was because he was like, oh well, if you would've said something before I printed the receipt I would change it but I can't now that I have which is a lie and that's what triggered me) for WAY TOO LONG (pro -- it was mostly in Italian). And he was being super rude to me about it.  So whatever... we go to the board and before we thought our train didn't leave until 640.. But we were looking at the wrong train and ours was leaving now.
So we rushed down and missed our train and then had to buy new tickets and our new train didn't get in until like 10 to Napoli so our Anziani had to come to Napoli at 9 pm and pick us up. It was just like a wake up call to me that (1) I need to listen to the Spirit in normal things, too, not just missionary work and (2) I've still got a long way to go.  I'm very grateful God is forgiving -- that's all I will say.

Also we have E. on baptismal date for the 19th.  And M. asked us when her baptismal date was so she could ask for the day off work and said every time she comes to church she can feel her testimony growing so that's INCREDIBLE.

Questions...

1.  How was church this week?
It was kind of sad and stressful because E. wasn't there, and they were announcing her baptism... The meetings themselves were good. One of the Relief Society counsellors is 19 and just got called and she taught her first lesson.  It was so good!!!!

2.  What do you think about the new Come Follow Me curriculum?
LOVE IT, NEED TO DO IT

3.  What was the happiest moment of your week?

Being inside the temple.  Side note - when we were in the celestial room (also it's crazy that you can feel a difference and it's not even dedicated yet) the Spirit is so strong and I don't know if this will make sense... But the temple has a different type of spirit, especially in the celestial room, and its incredible.

4.  What was the funniest/funnest thing that happened this week?
Being with all the sorelle in the mission at the temple

5.  What did you do for P-Day this week?
Saldi shopping! Spent like 45 euro and bought 2 skirts a sweater and tights. #score

6.  Did you see anything unusual or different this week?
We are at a train station right now and couldn't figure out how to get in, opened the door and there's just some homeless people living there. And it's the only entrance to the station. That was new.

7.  Did you eat anything new or unusual this week?
We had dinner with a family yesterday and I had my first gnocchi. It was incredible -- nothing like America.

8.  Have you gotten any more information about working at the temple open house?  We are so excited that you get to do that!
Just got some training but still don't know when.

9.  Do you know how much I love you?
Yesssss

10.  What have you learned about yourself this week?
I have got a long way to go.

11.  How has someone shown you love or kindness this week?
I just love Pres. and Sister Pickerd.

ok love you all xoxoxoxoxoxoxoxo
Sorella Gisseman

This is the scarf that I got in the zone gift exchange (it was an accident -- it's a scarf made for an anziano, oh well) and Sorella B's hat that she got.

The nasty salad that cost $28

Pizza!

I got all the mail this week -- it was seriously the best ever!  Thank you all so much!

M.and us at church -- she is so cute!!!!!!!

We had McDonalds for lunch today. It was almost the same.

Week 17 -- Baptism Dates!

Hello!!!!! Happy New year and happy (late) anniversary to my beautiful parents! xoxoxox love you

For this P-Day we are having a zone Napoli P-Day Christmas so we have a few hours to go shopping this morning so hopefully I will get pants!!!!

This week we had a few lessons with E. and it is so incredible to see how much she has progressed.

Also we got another baptism date for M. this week!

We did a scambioso (exchanges).  I went to Caserta with Sorella Sullivan and we taught a lesson kind of with this girl named C. and she had a lot of questions (but like doubty questions) and I was able to shut some down.  It was fun and I was able to try to resolve some of her concerns like why do we need the Book of Mormon.  And then she gave us some froyo.  We are buds. One thing that is super important that I explained to her is that if we want questions we will have questions but if we actually want answers we will find them.

Also we ran into these funny women on the street and they taught us like four swear words in Napolitano, lol. We are going to go teach them the restoration this week.

Festa is finally over! Technically it was over on Sunday because it was the bufana -- I am not exactly sure what that is -- it's like a witch or something who comes and does stockings. But everyone went back to work and school today. I am glad you are feeling better, Mom -- I have been praying a lot for you to feel better. Also you and Daddy say a few of the same things in your emails.  It is cute.  If you join a gym I'll get more serious about my exercise time.

Cute that you are going to Georgia. How is Christopher doing? Do you think he reads my emails? I like the idea of all of your family doing Come Follow Me together -- that's cute.

I am about in Jacob in my studies -- I'm glad to be out of the Isaiah chapters. I'm trying to read in Italian and it's a disaster to read Isaiah in Italian.

I don't need anything here.... we tried to find pants but I don't know if I will end up wearing them because my butt is huge and they are all too short. We will see. I've gained a bit of weight so I have no idea what size I would be so don't worry buying some and sending them to me. We've been given money to buy them here so I might just have to go get them tailored.  But that's something I'll have to try on all the times so I am good.

Questions --
1.  How was church?  How did people seem to like the two hour schedule?
Good! I think that people like it. I'm excited about studying Come Follow Me.  It was cute because both E. and M. were in church and both of them wrote down the assignments for next week.

2.  How does the change to two hour church change Sundays for you?
We get a bit more time to study in the mornings and get a bit more time in the afternoon... I think it will be easier to get people in church maybe.

3.  What was your happiest moment this week?
Solidifying 2 baptism dates.

4.  What was the funnest/funniest thing that happened this week?
Today as a zone we did a zone Christmas and got secret Santa names and then a few hours to shop and then came back, had pizza and did the gift swap, and are watching a movie now.

5.  Do you know how much I love you?
Yes

6.  What was the most interesting thing you ate this week?  Anything new?
Nope. We only had one meal appointment and it was with an American.

7.  What did you do for P-Day this week?
See above

8.  What stood out to you in your studies this week?
All I can say is I'm very glad to not be studying Isaiah in Italian anymore. Also I read the talk that Andrew put in the binder for me a lot- Slow to Anger from 1971.. and there is a quote I have been thinking about a lot lately that says "Frustrations often offer us the means of progression, for by overcoming them harmoniously, we grow and become more Christlike."  And I've been thinking a lot about that especially as I've been setting goals for the new year... of course it's not easy to change, of course it's frustrating but something that is helpful is thinking of the person I want to be in a year, the person I want to be when I come home. And who I want to be in 10-15 years. And keeping that in mind somehow helps me act in the moment in that way.

9.  How has someone shown kindness/love to you this week?
I've been noticing how incredible my companion is just at doing the little things. Like making me breakfast and cleaning up the little messes, and if it wasn't something I have been trying to work on my self I wouldn't notice.
10.  What are you looking forward to the most this coming week?
We should have the interview for E. this weekend!

11.  What can we pray for for you and for your investigators?
That they will have a stronger desire to come unto Christ!!!!!

12.  Is there anything that you need that we can send to you?
No!!!

AND THAT'S HOW IT IS HERE IN POZZUOLI!

xoxoxoxo

We got these incredible sfogliatella (I don't know how to spell) and they we filled with chocolate and then a Genovese sauce and a pomodoro and mozzarella one..... they are usually filled with something that tastes like Christmas.  They were so good.

We had a lesson in a bar and had hot chocolate and the owners gave us a TON of free cornetti and then E. picked up a tag when we were leaving and put it on cute.

Week 16 -- Happy New Year!

Hi!!!!! Sorry I didn't email yesterday (Monday, Dec 31) -- our P-day got changed to today (Tuesday, Jan 1) and they told us to deep clean our apartments today.  So that's what we're doing.

Last night (New Year's Eve) we had to be in early because the Napoli district -- I'm not in the Napoli district, I'm in the Napoli zone -- Napoli is super dangerous on New Year's Eve.  Fireworks in Italy are the craziest. Everyone goes on their balconies and shoots off so many fireworks, and then at midnight they drop beer bottles from the roofs and shoot guns into the air.  So obviously it won't be as much like that where we are but that stuff still exists because people are still from Napoli here, they still claim Napoli.

This week was good.  it's still weird because it's in the festa (holidays) and I just want the festa to be over because we can't really get appointments because everyone is out of town.  We can with certain people, but a lot of people are like, "after the holidays, after the festa".  And the festa doesn't end until January 6 because they also have what's called Bufona on the 6th which is...Bufona is a witch who brings the Christmas stockings.  Everyone's like out of town.  We've gotten so many meal appointments.  Starting last Sunday we had eight meal appointments in seven days.  And the thing about Italian meal appointments is they're not like American -- you don't dish yourself.  They dish for you.  And also even if you were to dish for  yourself, there's like six courses at every meal.  So basically you have a pasta, a meat, sometimes you'll have a salad, sometimes you'll have another meat, sometimes you'll have a vegetable or two or three, and then they do like a fruit, and then the dessert.  So it's a lot.  I love it, like I seriously love it, but just having that many in such a short time...my stomach was so, so bloated the entire week.  We joke about the paunch, which is just how your belly is inflated because we're in Italy (so much good food!), but the paunch was like the most I've ever eaten belly -- like that big, I literally looked pregnant.  Then it would go down to 3/4 size and then we would have another meal appointment.  It was so bad, but also SOOOOO good!

On Sunday we had a meal appointment with a family I really love, the Carforas.  They're super awesome.  After we did our video calls with our families the Sutzmans fed us a lasagne.  It wasn't like an Italian lasagne, but it was still super, super good, and salad.  I didn't actually eat a lot, but still -- if someone's going to put a lasagne in front of me I'm going to eat it because it's so good.  On Wednesday, there is a person they used to teach here and she's our neighbor.  So we see her pretty often but she works so much.  The whole family is from Armenia and on the 24th we went and dropped gifts off to everyone.  After the volunteer project with the Trimbles they had a ton of extra food that had been donated to them from the commissary on base -- Vanilla Wafers, Cinnamon Roll Oreos, and Twizzlers.  So we dropped those off as gifts to people we teach, people we used to teach, and to our favorite bar.  So we got two meal appointments off of those. One was to our neighbor from Armenia and she wasn't there when we dropped off the gift so she called us and said "Come over for pranzo on this date..." and she had a bunch of little appetizer type foods and she made this really cool Armenian dish, kind of like an egg roll but it was only meat inside and it was SO, so, so good and some people had an argument about whether Jesus drank wine and we sat out that one.  LOL  They sent us home with a whole plate of handmade Armenian desserts.  I like trying new things from other places.

The next day we had pranzo with another lady.  We asked her if she wanted to take the lessons and she completely ignored the question and started bearing her testimony about the Madonna, so that's was a no.  We had a ragu.  You asked if a ragu was like a marinara.  It's not.  I'm not really a marinara person, I don't really love red sauce. This is how Maria told me to make it -- and apparently it turns out really well but I don't know the difference -- you [ut carrots, celery, onions, really good meat (it's so fresh it's scary), and you cook that down and then you can put basil and other herbs in it.  She put cilantro in hers, I think, but maybe not because I'm not sure what the word is for cilantro... And then you cook all that down a lot and then you put in pomodoro which is tomato sauce but it's not like a tomato pasta or the same as tomato sauce that you get in the US.  It's just straight tomato, very liquidy.  Look up a recipe for ragu and see if you can find anything.  I'm really curious.  Then you put the tomato sauce in the pan and it's supposed to cook for a minimum of three hours, but the best ragus take forever.  mine was only on for three hours.  So she made a ragu and some chicken.  She sent us home with some food.  Everyone is sending us home with food and we can't eat it all, so there's this homeless man on our way to our main finding location so we share it with him.  I don't know if that's a bad thing or a good thing but that's what we do.  I think it's a good thing.

Our next meal appointment was with some people from our English group.  The girl is named P. and she's super good at English but her husband has been coming the whole time with her.  Anytime I speak Italian or do anything he's in the back smiling and nodding at me.  It's cute.  So we had dinner with then and their son who works in Finland was there.  They both speak English (P and her son) both speak English pretty well and she wants to speak English all the time because she wants to learn. A lot of the conversations were in English.  The son is used to speaking English because he works in Finland with computers an he speaks English at work.  It was fun because it was English.  The food was so good.  It was clams or mussels and pasta, such good food all the time.  They had a spinach thing and I like that.  It's like a Napolitano thing.  And a bacon wrapped mushroom and that was good.  It was fun.

Then our last meal appointment, to top them all off, was with another sister who is an elderly lady in our ward who only speaks Napolitan and it's hard for me to understand what anyone says in Napolitano.  It's a lot to take in and I have to think about what's being said and really concentrate.

On Sunday we went to church.  We were super bummed because E wasn't there.  We're super sad about it.  We met with her another day last week and we didn't have time to get our real lesson in because we were talking about other things going on in her life.  It was cool because I am able to communicate with her.  not all the time, but I can communicate with her.  It's helpful because she speaks a little bit of English so if I say an English word she'll help me figure it out in Italian.  I love her.  Anyway, I was able to say what I wanted, talk about the things I wanted to talk about in that lesson, like the before lesson which I usually don't participate in because I understand what's going on but I haven't practiced any of it, I don't have anything to say in regards to it because I don't know how to say it.  So that was really good to be able to communicate with her.  Anyway, after that discussion we handed her the law of chastity pamphlet and we're like, we're going to talk about this next time.  But the word for chastity in Italian means complete abstinence, celibacy, like what nuns do, for your whole life.  So we handed it to her and her eyes got sooooo big.  It was funny.  We told her not to worry about it, it's not that, you don't have to be a nun!  It was funny.  In our next lesson we taught the 10 commandments and emphasized keeping the Sabbath Day holy and the law of chastity.  I appreciate her because I can communicate with her and I understand her.  The lesson went really well.  She acts like she's already baptized sometimes, which is awesome.

Then yesterday, New Year's Eve, we had to be home by 5 pm when it was dark.  So we got in for pranzo at 1:00 so we had pranzo and then we had to do our studies and then we had to be inside because it was dark.  That was this week.  We didn't have a lot of lessons.  We had the lessons with E but other than that we didn't have a lot of lessons because everyone is busy with festa and they don't have time to talk.  But we love them anyway and will try to teach them anyway.

Answers to questions....

1.  Tell me about the rest of your Christmas!!!  Opening presents, being with the other sorelle, etc., etc., etc.

It was fun.  I know that's not the purpose of Christmas, but it was nice to have something normal and we very much appreciated it because it feels normal and fun.  It was fun to be with the other sorelle.  They were only here for a little while so we did breakfast and then the gingerbread houses and then we had to book it out to...  Oh my gosh, I forgot to tell the story of our second fire!!!  OK, so we booked it out to our meal appointment that I mentioned above.  So the ward gift, which was super cute, was stove top potpourri - an orange, cloves, cinnamon stick, rosemary. So cute and it worked really well.  So when the Caserte sorelle came over we put that on the stove because it was cute and Christmasy.  And then we booked it out to get to our appointment and oops, we forgot about it!  So we get to our meal appointment -- it took us about an hour to get there -- and then my companion looked at me and asked if I turned off the stove, and I'm like no, did you turn off the stove?  She said no, so oh no!  Oh no -- this is our Christmas meal appointment, and we have to leave because we had to do something.  We called the anziani and they weren't able to, so we literally sprinted to the train station and we make that train by like two minutes, thank goodness, and then we ran home.  We were thinking about the embarrassment of having another fire in our apartment.  So we ran home and by this time we've rationalized that there's no way that we can have a real fire, because there wasn't enough in the pan and there was nothing around it that could have caught on fire, the worst that's going to happen is our apartment is filled with smoke.  And yeah, our apartment was filled with smoke. but luckily we hadn't plugged the fire extinguisher back in from our last fire so no one knew about it, so that's the good part of the story so we didn't have to be embarrassed about it!  So that was Christmas.

2.  How was church today?  Are people there excited about changing to a two hour block instead of three hours?

It was good.  They asked us to bear our testimonies in the beginning and one of our anziani gave a talk.  He did a good job.  I just basically reused my birth testimony.  I think people are excited about the two hour block.  They also changed the time of church back by two hours.

3.  What was the spiritual highlight of your week?

Our lessons with  E.

4.  How have you seen the hand of the Lord in your life this week?  What tender mercies have you experienced?

I think it was a tender mercy to have a lot of meal appointments for the holidays because not everyone gets that and Italian meal appointments are even better.

5.  What stood out to you in your personal studies this week?

I've been studying the conference talks you sent me, trying not to go through them too fast.  I've been studying one talk each day from the notebook you sent.  I think it's a lot about the atonement in the sense of how the atonement is completely centered on love.

6.  What was the funniest thing that happened this week?

Yesterday for exercise time it was so funny.  I'm conflicted about exercise time because it's not like real exercise  in my mind but it is, but I'm so out of shape that it's just a mess, you know?  Anyway...Sorella has had some sisters dancing or doing zumba for exercise time so I said let's do it.  So instead of just plain exercise, we exercised crazy.  I don't even know how to explain.  We put on music and did squats but then we'd do jumps and kicks and fun things in between them and I ran and skipped around the apartment for two minutes and it was so fun and it actually was kind of exercise.

7.  Have you eaten anything new or unusual this week?

We ate eel on Christmas.  That was really good.  But that wasn't weird because I've eaten eel on sushi.  And the bacon wrapped mushroom.

8.  What have you learned about yourself so far on your mission?  What have you learned about Heavenly Father or the Savior?

One thing we talked about a lot this week is me getting a picture of who I want to become.  Sorelle was giving a lesson this week and that's one of the activities she had us do.  I think it's crazy how with that bigger perspective it's so much easier to let the little things go and focus on the big things...like "I want to be this person when I get home, and in order to be that person I need to do this now" type of thing.

9.  What are you doing for P-Day this week?

Cleaning.

10.  What are you looking forward to this week?

Lessons with E.

11.  Do you know how much I love you?

Yes.

12.  Is there anything specific we can pray for for the people you're working with?  Or for you and your companion?

E.

13.  When are transfers?

I think the 24th of January.

Love you!!!!
